If you’ve ever been to a Trader Joe’s in New York City, you know that it’s never a pleasant experience, with lines that almost always start at the entrance to the store. So a new location might not be such a bad idea.
Trader Joe’s will open a location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn — the second outpost in Brooklyn, following the Cobble Hill store, which debuted in 2008.
The new Williamsburg store does not have an exact opening date as of yet, but it will be located at 206 Kent Avenue between North Third Street and Metropolitan Avenue. Alliance Private Capital purchased the Kent Avenue lot back in January 2014.
Trader Joe’s is not the only supermarket chain with its eye on Williamsburg. A Whole Foods location is slated to open in spring 2016 on Bedford Avenue and North Fourth Street and has been under construction since 2012 (let’s just hope they don’t overcharge their customers).
Trader Joe's New Portuguese Custard Tarts Are Turning Heads
Yesterday, Trader Joe's Kitchen, a fan-run Instagram account that covers the store's latest finds, uploaded a post announcing the arrival of the store's new Portuguese custard tarts. Found in Trader Joe's frozen food section, the account followed the air fryer directions of cooking the desserts at 350 degrees for twelve minutes, finding that it had great results but the tarts ended up too hot to immediately dig into.
In their summation, Trader Joe's Kitchen thought the custard tarts were nice, but rather on the sweet side. The comments hewed to a similarly positive tone, with many self-identified Portuguese followers saying that for a frozen import of their dessert, the Trader Joe's product was rather good. "Totally legit," one commenter wrote. "If you find the custard too sweet, suggest having one like they do in Portugal: sprinkled lightly with cinnamon and eat with a cup of black coffee or espresso." As of writing, the only negative opinion voiced was "I wish the box was bigger."
Trader Joe's Kitchen did not share what they paid for the tarts. However, the site What's Good At Trader Joe's also positively reviewed the product, noting that for a box of four tarts, you would pay $2.99.
Trader Joe's recipe for biscuits and soyrizo gravy was delicious, especially with the addition of a fried egg
I decided to first try the soyrizo by using the chain's own take on biscuits and gravy, as it seemed easy enough.
While I baked some store-bought biscuits in the oven, I cooked the soyrizo on the stove for about eight minutes, added some salsa and plant-based milk to it, and stirred the simmering mixture.
Once everything was individually prepped, I split open a biscuit, poured a generous helping of the soyrizo mixture on top, then added an over-medium fried egg.
The "gravy" was incredibly thick but still pretty tasty. And this meal didn't require much time or effort, but I enjoyed that it felt like a decadent brunch.
Adding milk to the gravy tamed the soyrizo's spiciness, but you can mix in more hot sauce or chile powder if you favor extra heat.
And although Trader Joe's recipe didn't call for the fried-egg topping, the meal's very flexible and would be delicious with a number of different additions, like crispy veggies, a heaping pile of cheese, or a hearty dollop of sour cream.
Trader Joe’s drops mask rules, but many customers keep them on: It’s ‘too soon’
Yet, when given the opportunity to shop without a facial covering at Trader Joe’s in South Pasadena on Friday afternoon for the first time since last spring, the 72-year-old Robb entered the small store double-masked.
“I just don’t think you can take chances,” Robb said. “I’m an older citizen and I’m vulnerable even with the vaccinations, which help prevent serious illness, but not infection.”
Visitors to the South Pasadena Trader Joe’s were greeted by a small sign at the entrance that read, “In accordance with CDC guidelines, customers who are fully vaccinated are no longer required to wear masks while shopping in our stores.”
Inside the store, about 50 customers shopped around 3:15 p.m. with only two not wearing masks.
The message was a regurgitation of a company policy and statement issued earlier in the day noting that vaccinated customers no longer needed masks.
The situation underscores the concern some still have about going without masks even after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer guidance relaxing the rules.
Under the new federal guidelines, anyone who is two weeks or more past their final vaccination can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, large or small, without a mask or physical distancing.
The CDC’s guidance caught many off guard in California, including local and state health officials as well as business owners and front-line workers. Opinion was largely divided: Some said the move felt premature and could hurt front-line workers. Others said it was about time, with California and many other states experiencing the lowest number of daily coronavirus cases in a year.
Retailers are taking different approaches.
Trader Joe’s, Walmart and Costco will no longer require fully vaccinated shoppers to don masks, making them some of first major businesses to change their face-covering policies after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidelines Thursday.
Trader Joe’s supermarket updated the COVID-19 guidance on its website Friday to say it continues to review federal, state and local health advisories and to adjust efforts where it makes sense.
Beginning Tuesday, Walmart employees who are fully vaccinated also will have the option of working without a mask, according to a memo sent to U.S. associates that has been made public.
Costco President and Chief Executive Craig Jelinek announced the policy change in an open letter to customers, saying that the large retailer still recommends mask wearing for all visitors, “especially those who are at higher risk.”
Kroger, which operates Ralphs and Food 4 Less stores, and CVS said in statements that they are reviewing their practices, but are requiring masks to be worn by employees and customers for the time being.
Home Depot and Walgreens are also keeping their masking requirements in place, the retailers said through respective spokespeople.
At the Trader Joe’s, Robb had known of the policy change before heading to the chain neighborhood store founded in Pasadena in 1967 but felt it was too soon to shop maskless.
“I don’t think we’re far enough into vaccinations to stop wearing masks and there’s nothing that Trader Joe’s is doing to check if maskless shoppers are unvaccinated or not,” he said.
“This is irresponsible and too soon,” said Ana Mejia, 67, a Highland Park resident and shopper who stopped by for a bouquet of tulips and broccolini. “So many people are trying their best to stop this disease by masking and social distancing and we’re not done.”
Like Robb, Mejia also received two doses of Moderna and worries about vulnerable populations.
“There are still people trying to get shots, people who are vulnerable and now you’re going to have people who haven’t taken a vaccination walking into the stores without masks,” said Mejia through her blue surgical mask. “There are a lot of liars.”
On Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said the new mask guidance from the CDC has “created some new anxiety for many, that it may be too soon, too much. And so we’re adjudicating all that.”
On Friday, Newsom said he was planning on meeting with his health advisors later to talk about the CDC guidance. “We have to ask all the questions you would be asking us: How do you enforce? What does it look like in the schools? … There’s a whole host of complexities we all have to work through.”
Newsom said his office has been talking to other governors — some who wanted to quickly default to CDC guidelines but later realized how the recommendations posed difficult questions around enforcing mask-wearing rules for unvaccinated people.
“We’re working through all of that,” Newsom said, saying state officials have been on the phone with the CDC and local health officers across the state, where there are many different opinions and complicated things to entangle, such as existing Cal/OSHA requirements, safety agreements established with unions, and even how these guidelines would affect recently updated relaxed rules at amusement parks and sports venues.
Newsom said he hoped to issue guidelines and answer as many questions as he could, “mindful that many more questions will present themselves.”

Pop one of these hexagons into the oven and your lunch can be a crispy, somewhat dry flour tortilla containing a few tender bites of almost spicy chicken, black beans, and goo sauce. On a walk after this lunch, my partner proclaimed, “My burps taste like gas station.” Which is high praise, depending on what circles you run in. (Never-ending circles.)
Uncured Turkey Bacon & Cheese Sous Vide Egg Bites
Jiggly smooth! Radiate these for a few seconds in your magic box, douse in hot sauce, and squish between an English muffin for optimal results. Alternately, stuff your bra with each bite, then enjoy as a snack later in the afternoon during another boring Zoom.
Hot Hot Crispy Habanero Peppers
People love chile crisp, so why not crisp chiles? These are crispy, wispy shreds of fried habanero slices. They are the texture of fried butterfly wings. If you eat one straight, you will feel things ignite behind your eyeballs. They are truly hot. Like right on the tongue, HOT. There’s no slow build here, no nuance of flavors and spices. It’s a little shred of hell. And I love it here. On Instagram, a friend we’ll call “Cousin Tony” conjectured that this is the spiciest product Joe has ever sold, and I agree. Previous hot sauces and ghost pepper this-and-that did not come close. Try it yourself!
Organic Yellow Taco Shells
Been AWHILE. Been awhile. These oily shells must be revived in the oven, otherwise, you’ll have chewy, stale folded-over tortilla chips on your hands, which are also covered in oil. They’re so oily! But—thoughtful pause—at least they’re organic.
Everything But the Bagel Nut Duo
I’m getting tired of this anti-bagel agenda. And these nuts—rancid from sunflower oil past its prime, dry and dusty, lacking the dried garlic integral to the spice mix—sealed the deal. I want everything AND THE BAGEL, Joe. Enough is enough.
TIL Guara almonds are slightly larger than Marcona almonds. They remind me of the “slightly irregular” socks at T.J. Maxx, my second favorite TJ. They’re fancy, but off-brand fancy. And that’s good enough for me, baby. These Guara almonds are buttery and don’t leave a bitter aftertaste, but they DO leave your fingers glittery with salt. Lick each finger and let the salt commingle with the Purell. There’s nothing quite like it.
What is granola without oats? Sticky seeds all stuck together. Fantastic! One huge clump will satisfy your midafternoon cravings for something, anything, whatever’s closest. It did mine!
Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe
It instantaneously congealed on my plate into a mound of gummy worms bound by cacio-e-glue. Baaad.

Cuban Style Citrusy Garlic Seasoning Blend
Inspired by Cuban mojo sauce, which is wet, this is a combination of once-wet things that are now dry. Hmm. I want to bathe in tangy-garlicky-sweet-citrus mojo sauce. Not sure what I’m going to do with this mojo exfoliant. The dehydrated lime zest and lime oil come on STRONG and puckery, and then the garlic and onion make themselves known, while the dried herbs cheer from the stands. Sprinkle it on things you will cook over fire, report back on how it went!
Za’atar Seasoning Blend
There’s chickpea flour in this za’atar that seems to serve as filler, making it a little dustier than the Israeli-style blend I get from the Spice House. The lemon oil, another random addition, is overpowering. There are better za’atars out there, or you could DIY, but I appreciate Trader Joe’s for helping people get one step closer to za’atar fish and chips.

The Trader Joe’s Cleaning Supply Everyone Should Be Buying — Even If You Don’t Shop There
Somewhere along the way I forgot about sponges. Okay, maybe not so much “forgot” as saw one too many headlines about how gross they can become and got spooked. Either way, as an entire category, they exited my cleaning arsenal. Leave it to Trader Joe’s — and a “made in France” label, if we’re being honest — to bring them back into my life!
I kept hearing about these cute little pop-up sponges, and with weather warming up and spring cleaning on my brain, I grabbed the clever pack of them on my last TJ’s run: a dozen teeny, flat rectangles nestled in a package, hinting at quick and easy cleanups once they rehydrate in water.
Would I have picked them up if they didn’t come with that Product of France so prominently noted? An avowed Francophile, I admit I’m a sucker for all things Francaise. Peu importe, it doesn’t really matter. Because these sponges are ridiculously great.
I came home, and like a kid lured into learning science through volcano-making experiments, I took one of the little rectangles straight to the kitchen sink to see how it would do. (Yes, we have lived pandemic life long enough that I’m excited about cleaning the sink.) Watching the sponge come to life when it hit water was oddly satisfying, and I put it right to work on not just the white farm sink that gets daily workouts, but also the inside of the oven that needed some TLC after a fairly exuberant Sunday dinner.
And sure enough, its nubby texture did the trick! In tandem with TJ’s multi-purpose cleaner it erased grease that rinsed right out so I could keep using the sponge. Ooh! The one-inch opening that runs along the back of my range that I can never seem to get clean with a dish rag? The sponge squished right in there to reach every last bit of crud.
Hmm. What else can I clean? It became a bit of an expedition around the house. Bathroom sink? Check. Shower floor? Yep. How about the grubby detergent dispenser in the washing machine, and while I’m at it the murky window on the machine and, hey, I know, let’s go ahead and swipe out that sludgy buildup in the rubber water trap thing (what is that called anyway?).
The handy little guy stood up to all the chores I threw at it, rinsing clean easily. And, this may seem like a minor thing, but the fact that I don’t have to cram a big, squishy, plasticky package of four or six sponges into a cabinet somewhere — only to open it for one and have the rest spill out, I know you know what I’m talking about — makes me that much more likely to use them. The pack of 12 is so petite I dropped them in one of my favorite coffee mugs that I can just keep on my countertop. And this 12-pack is just $7.99. That’s just around 66 cents! Once the sponge has met the end of its useful life, I can just grab another one. (And it’s compostable, so I feel a little better about its expiration!)

Trader Joe’s will open an Essex Crossing outpost in 2018
Trader Joe’s massive New York expansion continued this week with the announcement that it will open a location at the Lower East Side megaproject, Essex Crossing. A Trader Joe’s has long been rumored to open at the base of the building at site 5, part of the nine-site development. Developers had declined to confirm the news up until now, but a press release put out by Trader Joe’s confirmed the news this morning.
The building at site 5, which goes by the address 145 Clinton Street, is being designed by Beyer Blinder Belle. The 15-story structure will have 211 apartments, half of which will be affordable. The commercial space at the building spans 70,000 square feet, and apart from the Trader Joe’s, the commercial space also comprises of a 22,000-square-foot Planet Fitness outpost. Plans for this site also call for 15,000-square-feet of open space.
"We've seen too many headlines about affordable supermarkets leaving Manhattan neighborhoods, so it's wonderful news that Trader Joe's is opening a store at Essex Crossing in the Lower East Side," Gale Brewer, the Manhattan Borough President, said in a statement. "All our neighborhoods need access to markets with fresh, healthy, affordable food, now more than ever."
The latest announcement on Trader Joe’s part follows the opening of a new location in Kips Bay in August. Currently the grocery chain operates six stores in the city, and there are plans for another one opening in Downtown Brooklyn in 2017, and rumors of additions in Williamsburg, a second location in the East Village, and another on the Upper West Side (in addition to the existing one there).
The overall Essex Crossing site spans 1.9 million square feet and will bring close to 1,000 apartments to the neighborhood, about half of which will be affordable. There are also plans for 850,000 square feet of retail and office, a new Regal movie theater, and a new NYU medical center. The megaproject is being developed by the Delancey Street Associates, which comprises of Taconic Investment Partners, L+M Development Partners, and BFC Partners.
